Biography

N Basavaraja, after getting a master’s degree (MFSc) in 1984, he worked at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and in 1991 he obtained another master’s degree (MSc) in Aquaculture from University of Stirling, UK., returned and continued his teaching and research work. He received his Ph.D. from Mangalore University for his Studies on the cryopreservation of spermatozoa from mahseer (Tor khudree). He teaches students at graduate, post-graduate and doctoral level at Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University. Apart from teaching he conducts research on Fish Breeding, endocrinology, genetics and conservation. He has more than 100 publications and supervised a dozen master’s and four doctoral degree students on aspects related to fish breeding, endocrinology and genetics. He successfully operated eight research projects funded by national and international agencies. He has received several awards and visited several countries, including UK, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, etc. His significant research accomplishments are : Development of technology for the management of captive brood-stock, breeding, hatching and larval rearing of the Deccan mahseer (Tor khudree), the Cauvery carp, Puntius carnaticus and butter catfish, Ompokbimaculatus; a simple and practical protocol for the cryopreservation of Tor khudree spermatozoa; production of monosexprogenies of the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromismossambicus) and guppy; production of 100% sterile common carp (Cyprinuscarpio) and Indian major carp breeding with a combination of buserelin and domperidone. Hewas member of the Consulstative Group of FAO Expert Workshop on `Freshwater Seed as Global Resource for Aquaculture` held at Wuxi, China.
