Biography
Liao I Chiu is chair professor of the National Taiwan Ocean University and National Pingtung University of Science and Technology. He obtained his MSc and PhD at the University of Tokyo. He returned to Taiwan in 1968 as a research fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation. He then served as director of Tungkang Marine Laboratory (1969-87), director general of Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute (1987-02) and chairman of the Fisheries Society of Taiwan (2005-08). His honors include: Outstanding Research Awards, National Science Council, Taiwan (1986-95); Academic Award, Ministry of Education, Taiwan (1987); Achievement Award in Science and Engineering, Taiwan American Foundation, USA (1989); and Presidential Science Prize, Taiwan (2009);Lifetime Achievement Award Global Aquaculture Alliance, USA(2012); Recently he received the Japanese award the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. He is an honorary life member of the Asian Fisheries Society and the World Aquaculture Society and the Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences and academician of Academia Sinica."
