Biography

Brain C. Small received his Ph.D.from the University of Maryland, USA and has spent the past two decades researchingphysiological and genetic mechanisms regulating fish production efficiency and management. During his career, he has held positions of Lead Scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Catfish Genetics Research Unit, Interim Center Director of the USDA National Cool and Coldwater Aquaculture Center, and Acting Associate Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Southern Illinois University (SIU). In his current faculty position at SIU, his research areas are interdisciplinary, and include fish physiology, endocrinology and nutrition as they relate to management in both culture and natural environments. He is recognized nationally and internationally. Hehas received several awards, including the "Distinguished Early Career Award in U.S. Aquaculture" from the United States Aquaculture Society.He currently has ongoing research and teaching collaborations in South America and China. He has authored over 80 publications, and has served on the editorial boards for Aquaculture, Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry and the North American Journal of Aquaculture.He is an active member of the World Aquaculture Society and the American Fisheries Society.
