Biography

Heather Manuel joined the senior management team of the Marine Institute in 2005 as the Director of the Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD). She holds Masters’ Degrees in Food Science and Business Administration, and she is currently pursuing her doctorate in environmental science through Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has more than 20 years experience working with the food, seafood, aquaculture and marine bio-industries in areas of applied research, quality assurance, food safety, biosecurity, waste management and waste utilization.During the period spanning 2011-2014 she successfully rebranded, restructured and expanded the Centre’s marine bio-processing capabilities through the addition of a new research lab and establishment of a research scientist, marine biotechnologist and lab technician staff positions. She is currently laying the ground work to establish a graduate student research program in marine bio-processing. In 2012 She was elected to the board of directors of the International Association of Fish Inspectors and co-organized the 2013 World Seafood Congress which attracted nearly 400 international delegates and 130 speakers from 35 countries. She is also a board member of the Pan American Marine Biotechnology Association and an editorial board member of the Journal of Ocean Technology.
