Biography

Graduate in Chemistry (1977) and Ph. D. (1984) in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Barcelona and post-doctoral fellow at the Vrije Universiteit from Amsterdam, Netherlands (1985-1986). Since 1999 full Research Professor at IDAEA-CSIC and Head of the Environmental Chemistry Department till may 2008. Since this date Director of the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) and from 2009-2014 Visiting Professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2007 he received the Prize King Jaime I on the Protection of Nature 2007 as well as the 2012.Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) 5th Award on Water Management & Protection, Saudi Arabia. and the 2012.Recipharm Environmental Award , Sweden. In the year 2014. he was Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Ioannina, Greece.. He has published over 890 scientific papers in journals of SCI (Hirsch index of 92), 197 book chapters, he is co-author of 1 book on Pesticides analysis in the environment and editor of 28 books on Environmental analysis and fate of pollutants. He is member of the Editorial board of several journals covering the topics of analytical and environmental chemistry. Supervisor of 47 Ph. D. thesis (1992-2016) on environmental analysis, fate and behaviour of organic pollutants and carbon-based nanomaterials in water, sediment and biota using mass spectrometric techniques, immunoassay, toxic assays and biosensors. Member of the Scientific Panel of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (2004-2009) and Panel Member of the EURYI (European Young Investigator Awards) from ESF (2004-2007) . During the period 2011-2015 he was Chair of the Scientific and Technological Board (STB) of the EU-Joint Programming Initiative on “Water challenges for a changing World”. At present he is Coordinator of the EU funded projects GLOBAQUA. Managing the effects of multiple stressors on aquatic ecosystems under water scarcity (2014-2019) and SEA-on-a-CHIP. Real time monitoring of SEA contaminants by an autonomous Lab-- on-a-chip biosensor (2013-2017). He is CoEditor in Chief of Sciennce of the Total Environment (Elsevier) since 2012.
